How to Find Customers as a New Small Business : Attracting Customers

All of the office supplies and sleek office desks in the world don't mean anything if you don't have any customers. That's the lifeblood of your business. Attracting customers is a top concern once your business is up and running, and you must dedicate a substantial portion of your time to this task in the early stages of your new small business.

Some businesses take a few months to up to a few years to become profitable. It really depends on the business model. For instance, many popular online business startups, like Facebook, took years just to break even after starting up. Facebook, established in 2004, just finally broke even in 2009. True story, read it here.

But that doesn't necessarily mean that your small business can survive for five years without a positive cash flow. You have to start on the quest of attracting customers to your business as soon as possible.

Methods of Attracting Customers

Attracting customers might involve hiring a third-party to go out and find potential customers on your behalf, buying a leads list so that you can make sales calls, or just going outside to where your customers are with flyers. A sales promotion, like coupons distributed throughout your community is an option as well. Of course, billboard, print, radio, and television are options if you have that type of budget. In most cases, it's smart to start off with reasonably priced ads and promotions as a small business.

What's Your Target Market?

Before you do anything to attract customers, you have to analyze your target market.

- What do they do?

- Where do they shop or hang out?

- What do they want and need?

- What message do they want to hear? What tone and language do they respond to?

- Has your product or service been crafted for their specific needs?

- How will they respond to this new offering?

All of this and more is covered in this section regarding attracting customers to your new small business. If you take the right steps, you will have customers buzzing around your small business like flies to fluorescent lights.
