Financing for Small Businesses
Home >> Financing for Small BusinessesGet Financing for Your Small Business
One of your biggest challenges when you start up a small business will be finding financing to get things going. You need seed money for supplies, equipment, establishing a location, buying products to sell, and just to have cash on hand during the first few months of operation or until you start generating a profit.
Be prepared-this is the step where many small business owners get jammed up. But if you are serious about starting your small business, as well as smart and persistent, you will succeed.
Different Types of Financing Methods
Financing for small businesses can come in the form of a business loan for small operations (such as from the SBA), a small loan from a CDFI (Community Development Financial Institutions), money from an "angel" investor, loans from friends and family, or money from your own personal savings. Some people take out second mortgages (not usually a good idea due to the amount of risk involved) and others use business credit cards to get off the ground (though this also isn't usually a smart plan due to the high interest rates and instability of most credit card accounts). It's not easy to get financing in the form of a business loan for small operations-you first have to draw up a very solid business plan. You also need very good credit and collateral. Also you must consider that due to the tightening of credit that began due to the recession of 2008, it will likely be even more difficult to receive funding for a small business with a loan (or business credit card) for a while.
Who Said You Need a Business Loan?
It's best to look to your own resources first when you are looking for financing for a small business idea. Take some time to save up money as you go through the planning process. Sell off some items that you really don't need. Make some major sacrifices in your personal life in pursuit of your dreams.Do you have family members or friends who can invest a few hundred or thousand dollars each to your new small business idea? Get them involved and pitch it as a family investment club or a special pool of funds that will go toward your business and that of other family members who are interested in serious entrepreneurship.
